Prior to European colonization, California was home to hundreds of different tribes and languages.  Today it is still home to 200 Native Californian tribes and a diverse group of indigenous peoples who have come from many parts of the Americas, contributing to a new diversity of indigenous artists.  From the Four Directions showcases artists from varied Native cultural backgrounds that exist today in the San Francisco Bay Area.  We have a multitude of indigenous artists from all of the Americas.

This exhibition is an opportunity to showcase many artists and celebrate Somarts'  longstanding relationship with the Native community through opening and closing exhibitions, in addition to one day of artist networking, socializing, and sharing of ideas. At this social, we will also work on building our ongoing database of artists and resources.  A town hall meeting will be held on the same day, July 12, to report back on the survey for a facility.

Lee Swensen will present Praise Song: 100 Years of American Indian Art, a slide presentation reflecting thirty years of his research. His presentation originally helped launch American Indian Contemporary Arts 25 years ago at Somarts.

Performances, potluck food and activities will be held at each event.  The public is welcome to attend all events and experience the talent and diversity of indigenous artists.

Please come to our town hall meeting to discuss the next steps in the development of an American Indian Community and Cultural Center (AIC&CC) in San Francisco. Saturday, July 12th 11am-1pm at Somarts, 934 Brannan Street, San Francisco, CA, 94103.  The San Francisco Mayor's Working Group on American Indian Issues has been working with a consultant on a feasibility study for a new AIC&CC for the past three months.  The group will present their findings, discuss possible next steps and ask for input from the community.

South of Market Cultural Center is a program of the San Francisco Arts Commission.
